Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have developed functional communicative competence using the macro skills reading, writing, speaking and listening, and have gained a basic understanding of the structure of the Indonesian language. They should be able to read basic textual material, fill in forms and write letters, conduct conversations on everyday matters, use a telephone and follow a selection of material from television and radio.
Synopsis Students will enrol in this subject to have their results accredited to their degree at `Beginners Indonesian' level. Students will select Indonesian Level I at the Sanata Dharma University and Realia Language School in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Classes at this level are held in English and Indonesian with a decreasing use of English. The contact time includes a total of thirty hours of field work and activities providing visual and contextual cues to meaning. Through this immersion technique language is acquired with increasing ease and significant aspects of cross-cultural communication practiced in different contexts are recognised.

* NB Granting of accreditation
to a Monash degree is dependent upon passing an exam at Monash University in
the Department of Asian Languages and Studies on return to Australia. Students
must contact B Koesasi, 9905 5229 to make the necessary arrangements to sit the
exam.
