Economic policy in contemporary Japan

* Prerequisites: JPS3190 or JST4190 (refer to Arts undergraduate handbook) or the permission of the instructor

Objectives Students completing this subject should a basic understanding of how policy is made in Japan and be familiar with some competing theories about policy-making in Japan. In particular, students should be able to appreciate the nexus between public and private interests and the subtle interaction between the bureaucracy, the business community and the political parties.

Synopsis After an overview of major Japanese institutions and actors in economic policy-making, extensive case studies will be carried out in such areas as the management of macro-economy, industrial sectors, social security, energy economics, labour market, distribution, international trade and foreign economic relations. This subject aims to sharpen students' analytical skills in economic and policy analysis and also to increase their understanding of the Japanese political economy and business.
