Advanced studies in Japanese economics

* Prerequisites: A Japanese studies sequence or economics or management or prior permission of the instructor

Objectives Students completing this subject should have an understanding of the fundamental institutions, major issues and contending perspectives on the Japanese `economic miracle', including its industrial policy, industrial relations, management practices, international finance, investment and trade.

Synopsis This subject introduces the students to the contemporary Japanese political economy. The major objective is to understand its fundamental characteristics and major issues including contending perspectives on the Japanese `economic miracle', industrial policy, international finance, investment and trade. Students who have not studied this subject at the undergraduate level are required to attend two additional hours of undergraduate lectures per week.

Assessment Written (4500 words): 50%
* Test (3 hours): 40%
* Seminar participation (1500 words): 10%
