Course structure

The MA in applied Japanese linguistics by research only requires that a thesis of 40,000-60,000 words be submitted and accepted.

The MA in applied Japanese linguistics by coursework and research, or by coursework only, requires the completion of parts I and II.

Part I is identical with the program for the Graduate Diploma of Arts (Applied Japanese Linguistics) (see below). Students with an honours degree in a relevant area with a grade of HIIA or above (or its equivalent) may be exempted from the whole or from part of part I of the program.

Students proceeding to part II by coursework only will take JAL5610 (Research seminar in applied Japanese linguistics) and JAL5210 (Advanced studies in teaching Japanese as a foreign language) as well as twenty-four points of other subjects which may include advanced Japanese language. Up to twelve points may be selected from relevant subjects outside the department of Japanese studies. The program must be approved by the graduate coordinator.

Students proceeding to part II by coursework and research must submit a 66 per cent thesis of 25,000 to 35,000 words (thirty-two points) or a 75 per cent thesis of 35,000 to 40,000 words (thirty-six points).They will also take the JAL5610 (Research seminar in applied Japanese linguistics) for twelve points and, in the case of students doing the 66 per cent thesis, a further four points of coursework.

Only students who have demonstrated that they are satisfactorily prepared for research may proceed to do the thesis. Students intending to include research work (the 66 per cent thesis, the 75 per cent thesis, or either of the two twelve-point research papers in the case of coursework only students) are required to apply to the graduate coordinator and must receive the approval of the department's Postgraduate Program Committee before being enrolled for the research.
