Synopsis This subject examines the legal aspects of environmental protection. Common law doctrines, such as nuisance, are considered but the primary emphasis is placed on the analysis of controls designed to control pollution of air, water and land, noise and conservation of the national estate. Australian enactments at the national and state levels are compared with analogous provisions in the United States and Great Britain. The subject will consider coordination of environmental controls between the Commonwealth and States. The subject will focus on the lawyer's role in environmental conflicts at both the administrative and litigational stage, and also the role and standing of private citizens and environmental groups at each of those levels.
