Development studies: theories and approaches to policy

Objectives It is intended that students of this subject will acquire knowledge about the nature of development studies as a multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary field of study, learn about and critically analyse debates within disciplines which contribute to development studies, and learn to operate as part of a multidisciplinary team in researching a development project and writing a joint appraisal of it.
Synopsis In the first half of the semester the seminar group will study the contribution of some major disciplines (politics, economics, anthropology, technology studies and health studies) to development studies and analyse debates within these disciplines relating to development. In the second half, the class will participate in a role play exercise, where they form an interdisciplinary team to produce an appraisal report on a development assistance project document.
