Objectives On completion of this subject students should have developed a critical understanding of the generic characteristics of naturalist fiction, with particular reference to the novels of Emile Zola, and extended their knowledge of contemporary literary and cultural theory.
Synopsis A selective study of Zola's fiction in relation to current critical approaches to his work.

Recommended texts
Texts for study will be selected in consultation with the class, but will probably include L'Assommoir, Nana, Au Bonheur des Dames and Germinal.
