Objectives Students completing this subject will have developed critical awareness of constructions of female and sexual identity; the social contexts of female (self-)representation, with particular reference to the notion of women in opposition; and aspects of critical theory relevant to these questions.
Synopsis An introduction to representations of women in the context of social history. The subject will examine images of the prostitute and the maidservant, the themes of marriage and adultery, the figure of the femme fatale, gender and social class, women as consumers, women and public life. It will raise questions concerning narrative strategies, psychoanalytic theory and feminist criticism.
Assessment Short essay (1500 words): 20%
