Culture, creativity and critique
Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to express persuasively their deep understanding of how other forms of knowledge, especially those derived from social theory, philosophy and aesthetics relate to the contemporary production and evaluation of art; that they can write inspired critical analyses of contemporary craft or art, including their own productions; that they can synthesise historical and critical language with facility and exploit metaphor and other imaginative tropes while not sacrificing accuracy or purpose.
Synopsis A range of theoretical and critical approached to journals in the craft and art area will be examined. Discussion groups may involve the discourses of simulacra, deconstruction, gender politics and the status of the non-mainstream, criticism, deconstruction, poststructural agendas, postmodernism and postcolonialism.
