Students are advised that, while the faculty will endeavour to give every possible assistance and advice concerning subject choice, the onus is on the student to ensure that the subjects selected meet the course regulations and requirements. This is not the faculty's responsibility and the faculty does not take any responsibility for error in subject selection.

Diploma of Business (General Administration) by distance education -DipBus(GenAdmin)

The course

This course provides a tertiary education channel for supervisory and administrative personnel whose knowledge is largely experienced-based. While providing depth in administration and service, it also reflects the need for a broad knowledge base in business.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will:

+ have developed an understanding of management theory and practice;

+ have the ability to use a variety of tools for planning, implementing and controlling processes and functions in changing organisational environments;

+ have cultivated the insight and analytical skills necessary to critically appraise and improve organisational practices; and

+ have fostered the development of positive business ethics, a desire for quality work outcomes and an awareness of business and technological change.

Course structure

The course consists of eight subjects of study over two years by distance education. The normal study load for distance education students is two subjects per semester. The normal subject sequence is shown below and where students may require a variation to this program individual course advice must be sought.

Entrance requirements

(a) Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

Satisfactory completion of the VCE with English, units 3 and 4, and it is desirable that students possess an average pass grade in Year-11 maths.

(b) Comparable qualifications

Applicants may also satisfy entrance requirements on the basis of qualifications deemed to be the equivalent of the above VCE TAFE qualifications (eg the first year of a TAFE associate diploma or a TAFE qualification that satisfies the first year of a TAFE associate diploma) or comparable Year-12 qualifications including International Baccalaureate or approved tertiary-level study completed in Victoria, other States of Australia or overseas.

(c) Special admission - mature age

Those who have reached at least twenty-three years of age in the year of application and who have either not satisfied the above entrance requirements or have done so more than three years prior to their application, may apply for entry. Applicants applying in this way will be required to sit an admissions test and undertake other assessments which may be prescribed.

(d) Open Learning

Successful completion of at least two open learning subjects.

Technology requirements

It is recommended that students should have access to a personal computer. (Please note that the School of Business and Electronic Commerce* operates in an IBM-compatible windows environment.) It is also recommended that students have access to a modem to facilitate email communication with teaching staff.

Credit for work done elsewhere

A student will be exempted from any subject where an equivalent subject has already been completed at post-secondary level. In such cases a student must select an additional elective subject(s) in substitution for the subject(s) exempted. Application for credit for partially completed courses will be determined on an individual basis.

It is essential that subjects submitted for credit and exemption fit the philosophy and principles of this diploma course of study. Subjects studied more than ten years ago are regarded as beyond a reasonable time limit for applicability and generally will not be considered for credit/exemption.

Fees

HECS

The Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) requires contributions to be made by students towards the cost of their higher education studies commenced after 1 January 1989. The amount to be contributed depends on the study load (subjects) undertaken each semester, and is payable whether or not a pass in each subject is achieved. An additional fee will also apply for amenities and library services. More detailed information relating to HECS can be obtained from the Student Administration Office, Monash University, Gippsland campus, Churchill, Victoria 3842.

Industry partnerships

The Federal Government provides funds to assist industry to improve productivity through the development of skills in education-industry partnerships, and at the same time enable employees to engage in tertiary education. The School of Business and Electronic Commerce* is able to access these funds by forming partnerships with employers to facilitate employee participation in the Associate Diploma programs. Costs are shared and, in this arrangement, the School of Business and Electronic Commerce* flexibility in delivery mode. In particular, on-campus or on-site lectures and tuition, distance education or a combination of these can be negotiated.

The course

The Diploma of Business (Productivity Management) is an initiative of the Prime Minister's Department and the Australian Productivity Council. It reflects the current Australian emphasis on developing competitive advantage in international markets. The course aims to develop in supervisory and line management non-graduates, whose knowledge is largely self-developed, the ability to recognise and implement improvement opportunities within organisations.

On completion of this course students will:

+ be capable of contributing to improved organisational productivity;

+ have developed an understanding of management theory and practice;

+ have the ability to use a variety of tools for planning, implementing and controlling processes and functions in changing organisational environments;

+ have cultivated the insight and analytical skills necessary to critically appraise and improve organisational practices; and

+ have fostered the development of positive business ethics, a desire for quality work outcomes and an awareness of business and technological change.

Course structure
