Bachelor of Business (International Trade) - BBus(IntTrade)

Course code: 0389

Course director: Mr Ross Guest

The course

This course is principally designed for students seeking a career in international business. The course is available in two sequences. Both sequences comprise a core of foundation business subjects (common to all Bachelor of Business degrees at Monash University), specialist studies in areas of relevance to international trade and three electives. The foreign business language sequence includes a minimum of one year of study in an approved foreign language related to international trade, such as Chinese or Japanese. The international business sequence includes an extended range of specialist trade subjects.

Objectives

The course is designed to produce graduates equipped to operate effectively in the international business arena and to:

+ provide a thorough appreciation and understanding of the impact the international environment has on Australian business activities (this includes the study of the relationships which exist between individual enterprises and the financial, legal, economic, political and trade systems which comprise the international environment);

+ provide an understanding and appreciation of the various ways an Australian firm can gain access to foreign markets;

+ raise students to a basic level of foreign language proficiency and cultural awareness (This is achieved through the foreign business language sequence - offered at the Peninsula campus only.);

+ develop conceptual and practical skills so that graduates will be able to understand the major determinants of trade; identify and analyse international business opportunities and problems; understand the law relating to international trade; appreciate the function and characteristics of international financial markets and corporate funding decisions; appreciate the cultural and political aspects of export marketing to sell products overseas successfully.

Venue

The foreign business language sequence is offered at day classes only at the Peninsula campus. The international business sequence is offered at day classes at the Caulfield campus. Evening classes in some subjects are also offered at the Caulfield campus.

Credit for work done elsewhere

In addition to part one, section four of the degree regulations, the following credit transfers have been standardised for the Bachelor of Business (International Trade):

+ holders of a relevant associate diploma (with Year-12 entry) from a TAFE college may be eligible for credits up to a maximum of eight subjects.

Foreign business language sequence

Available only at the Peninsula campus, two language subjects must be taken as a sequence of study in an approved foreign language. Either business Chinese (Mandarin) or business Japanese is recommended. However, students may choose another language relevant to international trade, with the approval of the Course Director. Up to three further language units may be taken as electives. Students who enrol in the double degree Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Business (International Trade) take seven units of languages as their Arts major (see Arts Faculty Handbook or course brochure). The program assumes no prior knowledge of the language.

The languages focus on contemporary and business vocabulary and the languages will therefore complement the business subjects and enhance career prospects.
