Synopsis The complexity of relationships between family life, the economic structure, employment, social policy and ideology. Theoretical and historical examination of the family, and the state, patriarchy, the `new' father, mothering, work and family, sexual partnering and gender relationships, divorce and the future of the family. Major theoretical perspectives will be Marxist, feminist and functionalist.
Assessment Essay (2000 words): 30% + Seminar paper (2000 words): 40% + Test (2 hours): 30%
