Introduction to sociology I

6 points + 3 hours per week + Summer semester/First semester + Peninsula

Synopsis This subject introduces students to the discipline of sociology: the sociological perspective, conceptual and theoretical concerns, and the sorts of questions sociologists research. Key substantive areas will be focused on which are familiar to students, including the sociology of popular music, sex and gender, family, mass media, power and control, religion, etc. This subject is designed to build on the students' existing knowledge of the social world in the development of an appreciation of the sociological approaches to the analysis of social behaviour and structures.

Assessment Essay (1500 words): 30% + Essay (2000 words): 40% + Examination (1 hour): 30% each
