International relations and development

Synopsis This subject is concerned with the international politics of development and underdevelopment. Topics include major trends in development theorising, both explanatory and prescriptive, seen in the context of postwar international history; the fading of the `first world-third world' paradigm and the rise of new analytical frameworks such as `globalisation' and `clash of civilisations'; the changing roles of states and markets in development; democratisation and development; the state of North-South relations with reference to trade, aid, and debt.

Assessment Essay (4500 words): 60% + Examination (3 hours): 40%
