Australian constitutional democracy

Synopsis This subject deals primarily with Australia's political institutions and the principles and values which inform them. Major areas include the Constitution, responsible government, federalism, the High Court and the parties. It explains debates about the hybrid nature of the Constitution, constitutional reform, the changing role of the High Court and the republic. The underlying question is how to classify Australia's governmental system by comparison with other similar systems.

Assessment By a combination of short exercises and essay totalling 4000 words: 60% + Examination (2 hours): 40%.
