Seeking a new world order: the US and international relations

Andrew Butfoy

8 points + 3 hours per week + First semester + Clayton

Synopsis This subject focuses on the role of the United States in the international system. The central concerns are with (a) the development of the foreign policy of this only remaining superpower, (b) approaches to the problems and opportunities of global interdependence, and (c) the management of conflict and military power. The subject will be looked at in its post-1945 historical context; however, most of the subject deals with the period 1985-1995. The transformation of US relations with Moscow (including the end of the Cold War) will therefore provide one reference point while current policy issues will provide another.
