Synopsis The main focus of the subject will be on the nature, significance and impact of the debates concerning models of development for the People's Republic of China. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between economic reform, and social and political reform. This will involve an examination of the role and power of the Communist Party, and its interrelationship with the People's Liberation Army and the state, apparatus, the nature of socialism in China, the relationship between the state and the individual, and China's changing relationship with the outside world. During the subject special attention will be devoted to the impact of the above issues on particular social groups such as women, peasants and national minorities, and on such matters as education and social stratification.
Assessment: Written (2500 words): 40% + Tutorial attendance, presentation and participation: 10% + Examination (3 hours): 50%
