Development of policing in Australia

8 points + 3 hours per week + First semester + Caulfield/Distance + Prerequisites: PCE1010 and PCE1030

Synopsis The subject is designed to provide insight and understanding of the historical development of policing in Australia. The aim of this subect is to explore in depth the foundations, present structures and future directions of policing in Australia. The student should gain the ability to be critically aware of the historical determinants of present day policing in australia. The subject will explore changes in policing; compare colonial policing to that of today; examine the ramifications of relevant historical Royal Commissions and inquiries; investigate the causes and effects of the Melbourne police strike; study the expanding role of police during national crises; assess police procedures and practices of maintaining public order; consider police adaptation of modern technologies, and predict, according to historical precedent, future developments in policing.

Assessment Research essay (3500 words): 45% + Topic essay (2000 words): 30% + Tutorial presentation and class participation: 25%
