Victimology

8 points + 3 hours per week + First semester + Caulfield + Prerequisites: PCE1010 and PCE1030 + Prohibited combination: PCE1270

Synopsis A study of some specialised areas of criminal law including crimes without victims; compensation for crimes; the unmaking of criminal law; political crimes and civil liberties; administrative sanctions and redress, eg ombudsmen; legal rights of law officers; concepts of deviance and crime; the social psychology of crime; sexual offences and the attitudes and behaviour of police towards victims of sexual assault; the relationship between offenders and victims; children and elderly victims of crime; interpretation of criminal statistics and role of community agencies in the treatment of offenders. On successful completion of the subject students will comprehend the complexities involved in analysing `victims' of crime.

Assessment Essay (3000 words): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 40% + Tutorial presentation and short paper: 20%
