Indonesian gamelan (special studies)

8 points (subject also available for 4 points in the Bachelor of Music) + 4 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: MUS1060, MUS2480 or MUS3480 or prior experience in gamelan practice/theory and audition.

Synopsis This subject aims to develop advanced Javanese gamelan performance skills and foster an interest in and understanding of contemporary composition for gamelan. It includes (i) advanced gamelan theory and performance practice and (ii) ideas, techniques and historical and recent developments in gamelan and dance composition, both in Java and internationally.

Assessment (8 points) Essay (2500 words): 25% + Written/oral assignments: 15% + Performance assignments and concert: 50% + Examination (1 hour): 10%

Assessment (4 points) Written (1000 words): 20% + Performance assignments and concert: 50% + Examination (1 hour): 20%
