Synopsis Critical discussion of key theoretical concepts in the literature on ethnomusicology since the 1950s. Application of these concepts in the study of three Asian musical traditions: India, Indonesia and Japan, including theories of music as culture, unity of the arts and religion, culture contact, aesthetics and the classification of musical sounds and objects.
