Synopsis Through critical listening, composition and analysis, students examine rondo, sonata and variation (`sectional' and `continuous') forms, two-part inventions, chorale preludes and fugue. Harmonic studies include various methods of modulation to closely and distantly related keys. The subject then traces the chain of events which led to the abandonment of a tonal centre. Students are asked to compose in the styles of `atonal' composers and examine the twelve-tone system developed by Schoenberg through the study of selected works.
