Synopsis This introductory, performance-based subject acquaints students with the basic theory and practice of Javanese and Balinese gamelan (instrumental and vocal music), Javanese dance and shadow puppet theatre (wayang kulit) accompaniment. Includes study of ensembles, tuning systems, notation, musical structure and form, basic performance practice, the sociology of performance, and the history and cultural context of the performing arts.
Assessment Essay (1500 words): 25% + Written/oral assignments: 15% + Performance assignments and concert: 50% + Examination (1 hour): 10%
