Introduction to management: managing organisations
Dr Ian Roos and Professor Chris Selby Smith
6 points + Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week + First,
second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: Nil. It is recommended that students
complete MGC1020 prior to undertaking MGC1030 (Introduction to management:
people and organisation)
Synopsis This subject is concerned with how organisations operate, the
context in which they operate, and the factors which determine how managers can
operate more effectively. Designed for students proceeding to further studies
in management and also for students from other departments and faculties. The
five main components are: (I) the management function; (ii) the genesis of
modern management; (iii) the development of management theory; (iv) the context
in which managers operate; and (v) managing organisations.
Assessment Written assignments (1000 words and 2000 words): 10% and 20%
+ Examination (2 hours): 60%
