Synopsis This subject comprises: (a) articulatory phonetics - an introduction to the principles of articulatory phonetics; the description and classification of speech sounds, and the International Phonetic Alphabet; (b) acoustic phonetics - an introduction to the acoustic analysis of speech sounds; the physical properties of speech sounds and their measurement, spectrographic and mingographic analysis; (c) phonology - an introduction to the principles of phonological analysis and issues in phonological theory; phonological processes, phonemic analysis, phonological naturalness, rules and redundancy.
Assessment Written assignments (2000 words): 40% + Class test (2 hours): 50% + Practical work/laboratory work/tutorial participation: 10%
