Electronic document operations

Synopsis This subject enables students to explore issues associated with electronic documents. Students will be made aware of a range of electronic document transfer technologies, including FAX and EDI. Issues such as ASCII, HTML, SGML and Postscript formatting of documents will be discussed. Theoretical and practical aspects of hypermedia linkage of documents and elements of documents will be studied. Compression techniques will be discussed briefly. Issues related to standards (eg ODA, SGML, text encoding initiative) will be explored. Aspects of document design and layout will be explored. The impact of transmission format on retrieval and storage will be considered. Possible future developments will be discussed. Practical work will deal with the use of markup techniques.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 60% + Assignment: 20% + Practical work: 20%
