Synopsis This subject introduces the role of the document, examines its nature and properties, and investigates the way in which the document functions as a stored, accessible and effective resource. It also explores the nexus between technology and the documentary process and notes the effect of changing technologies on the document. Topics covered include: introduction to information as a stored, accessible and effective resource; forms taken by the document as stored information (from cave painting to virtual reality); the medium by, on and through which the document is recorded; the interrelationship between available technology and the document; the impact of available technology on systems which create, capture, store, access and retrieve information.

Assessment Four project-based assignments: 25% each
