Synopsis A literary study of Old English lyric and narrative poems and homiletic prose texts, beginning with an analysis of rhetorical style in the prose and continuing with an examination of some critical approaches to the study of Old English poetry, applied to the text of Beowulf. Students who wish may specialise in the language of the period.
Assessment Exercise (1500 words): 25% + Two essays (2000 words): 30% each + Seminar assessment (equivalent to 500 words): 15% + An optional examination (3 hours) may replace up to 30% of the written work
