Synopsis This subject looks at the emergence of modernist dramatic forms in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly in Europe. The focus is on `realism' and some of the major responses to it. Tutorials will emphasise practical and critical exploration of the texts and performance styles usually associated with a range of artistic movements such as naturalism, symbolism, expressionism, surrealism, and epic theatre. Although required to participate in tutorials, students will not be assessed on their performance skills. Lectures will run for one hour and tutorials for two.
