The languages of literature

8 points + 2.5 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + It is recommended, but not essential, that students should have completed ENH1040 or ENH1111 or CLS1010. Students who have not taken any of these subjects should consult the subject coordinator.

Synopsis The subject will introduce students to discourse stylistics as a method for examining literary texts. It will begin with some necessary linguistic background in the areas of phonetics and discourse analysis itself (drawing upon the student's acquaintance with syntax gained in one of the recommended first-yeaer subjects) and proceed to the study of the following areas of interest: metre and other kinds of rhythmic form; metrical style; soundpatterning and its affective and iconic potential; poetic diction; the functioning of metaphor, metonymy and other forms of figurative language; formal rhetoric; and the syntactic and discoursal analysis of texts.

Assessment Seminar paper (1000 words): 15% + Short essay (1500 words): 20% + Long essay (2500 words): 30% + Class-test 10% + Exercise in parody: 15% + seminar participation: 10%
