Nineteenth-century literature

6 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Peninsula
Synopsis The subject examines the theory and practice of literature in
the nineteenth century. Some of the factors which precipitated and/or hastened
changes and influenced the directions of writing in this period will be
studied. The development of romantic thought and its coexistence with realistic
approaches, especially in fiction, will be emphasised as well as the beginnings
of some modern trends.
Assessment Written (2500 words): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 50% +
Seminar participation: 10%
