Synopsis

This unit interrogates the processes and politics of social policy-making within the Welfare State. It reviews procedures and instruments used to formulate, fund, implement, evaluate, and revise social policy, and critically examines the impact of major policy decisions on the welfare of citizens.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the unit, students should be able to:

understand the relationship between social, economic and public policy;
understand the processes and politics of social policy making;
understand alternative theoretical frameworks for analysing social policy;
assess the costs and benefits of a policy decision;
understand the methods used to challenge and influence policy agenda, choices and directions.

Exam: 40%

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
