Synopsis

This unit aims to introduce students to the ways in which sociological knowledge can be used to understand contemporary environmental issues. In order to achieve this, the unit has a dual focus - society and nature. First, it develops theoretical and conceptual knowledge drawn from traditional and contemporary sociological theory to provide analytical frameworks. Second, through the anlaysis of environmental issues, the unit seeks to apply these frameworks to specific local, national and international contexts.

Outcomes

develop sociologically informed theoretical and conceptual frameworks for the analysis of contemporary environmental issues
apply these frameworks to a range of contemporary environmental problems
consider the implications and uses of this analysis for contributing to our understanding of contemporary environmental issues and relevant public debate
present well-constructed written arguments which show evidence of wide reading and an ability to apply theoretical and conceptual knowledge and understanding to contemporary environmental issues and problems, especially in the examination.

Written work: 60% (2500 words)
2 hour Exam: 40%
