In this unit students consider individual, group and social processes driving creativity and creative action. Themes include the role of cognition, imagination, judgment, criticism, personality, materials, forms, humour, social milieu, and cities in the creative process. The aim is for students to understand the multiple factors affecting creativity and how creative individuals, organizations and societies are possible. Examples will be drawn from a wide variety of creative arts including theatre, film and visual arts, architecture, music, writing and publishing.


On the successful completion of this unit, students will be able to demonstrate:

  1. An understanding of the general nature of creative processes.
  2. An understanding of the relation between individual, group and social aspects of creativity.
  3. An enhanced capacity to identify creative acts, works, and processes.
  4. An ability to explain and analyse course concepts and debates in written and oral forms, and to engage at a high level of independent research.

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 288 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
