Synopsis

The unit introduces students to music research methods. In particular the unit provides outlines the practical aspects of historical musicology, ethnomusicology, and jazz and popular music studies, concentrating on methodologies associated with textual criticism, archival research, repertoire and performance practice.

Outcomes

On completion of this unit, students are able to:

Demonstrate skills essential to constructing a research proposal in a variety of areas.
Demonstrate critical reading skills applicable to both text and score.

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 288 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
