Synopsis

This unit is an introduction to visual cultures from the perspectives of art, design and architecture. Key themes within contemporary visual culture are discussed in terms of aesthetic, technological, historical and ideological contexts. Students develop critical skills in analysing the diverse artefacts and practices of art, design and architecture and communicating their significance in verbal and written forms.

Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will have the ability to:

identify works of art, design and architecture and place them in cultural contexts
recognise relationships between art, design and architecture in the development of visual culture
engage with key issues and concerns within contemporary visual culture
critically analyse works of visual culture and communicate their findings in verbal and written form
identify contemporary visual culture with an awareness of ethical, social and cultural issues

Written Assignment 1,000 words (30%)
In semester assignment (visual test) (30%)
Research essay 2,000 words (40%)
