Synopsis

The unit explores the role of journalism in raising awareness and empowering the dispossessed, questioning our responsibilities as citizens living in uncertain times. Students investigate the social, economic, cultural and ideological attributes of specific models of reporting - including environmental, citizen, public, alternative, development and peace journalism. By examining if and how those models challenge the cultural logic of late capitalism and failures of the industrial journalism model, the unit encourages students to tackle greater questions of journalism and social change.

Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit students should be able to

  1. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the role of journalism in the context of social change;
  2. Demonstrate an advanced ability to research, discuss and analyse issues in a clear, concise and nuanced way;
  3. Collaborate constructively with fellow students in learning and discussion, including online forums;
  4. Produce written work to deadline, making effective use of the conventions of journalism and scholarly presentation;
  5. Work independently and in groups to achieve learning outcomes;
  6. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the strengths, limitations and socio-professional implications of scholarly practice in journalism.
