Notes
This Master of Teaching specialisation qualifies graduates to teach children from Foundation to Year 12 (five to 18 years of age) in both primary and secondary schools. Students develop an understanding of learning at the heart of teaching and acquire a perspective of teaching as the power to change. The specialisation develops an understanding of teaching and learning theories for primary school children based on contemporary education issues and child development, and focuses on the key elements of the primary curriculum including English and literacies, mathematics, arts, humanities and social education, science, health and physical education. In addition, students develop their understanding of teaching and learning approaches for secondary school as these address adolescents' cognitive, social and emotional development. Specialist study provides the knowledge required to become a teacher in one secondary subject area such as English, mathematics, the sciences, history, social education, languages, the arts, business, health and physical education, or applied/vocational learning. Students learn how inclusive practices meet a diversity of student needs and build a repertoire of strategies to manage classroom settings. Professional understanding and skills are extended through 60 days of supervised professional experience, and students learn to generate and reflect on evidence to evaluate their practice and build professional judgement. This specialisation prepares students to become effective and proactive leaders and educators in primary and secondary education.
