Synopsis

This unit will focus on developing an understanding of the complexity of risk and client characteristics that are present in many instances and ways to address such risk that takes into account professional skills and the interplay of personal, structural, policy and legal frameworks.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Discuss the complexities and challenges of working with older clients who present with problems that encompass a number of domains of service delivery;
  2. Critically analyze the interplay of personal and structural characteristics of selected special needs groups within the ageing population;
  3. Understand the key features of inter-agency collaboration including its strengths and limitations with respect to older people;
  4. Critically review standards of care provided to elderly people including analysis of issues involved in abuse in care; and
  5. Develop appropriate care plans and care plans, for older people, to meet criteria concerned with client wishes and interests, available resources and policy and legal considerations and constraints.

Assessment

Analysis if a case study. 2,000 words and worth 45% of the unit mark.
Literature review of 2,500 words worth 55% of the unit mark.

Contact hours

Students will attend up to three hours of direct teaching classes per week and are expected to complete nine hours of independent study each week.

SWK2100, SWK2120 and SWK2160

Co-requisites

SWK3340 and SWK3390. Restricted to students enrolled in Bachelor of Social Welfare.
