Synopsis

Leadership is fundamental to the nature of nursing and midwifery; in the formation of safe practice, interdisciplinary relationships, education, research and health care delivery.
In this unit, nursing leadership is explored by examining the historical nature of leadership in nursing. The social construct of leadership will be investigated in the context of interpersonal organisational health care relationships and clinical practice. A major feature of the unit is an exploration of the professional values and ethics that form the basis of decision making in health care systems and nursing practice.

Outcomes

On completion of this unit, it is expected that the student will be able to:

Identify the contexts in which health care is provided in Australia including primary care, acute care, sub acute care and supportive care;
Discuss the philosophical and ethical values that underpin nursing as a profession;
Describe the attributes and roles of leaders and leaders in nursing;
Conceptualise the relationship between nursing, leadership and teamwork;
Analyse values as the foundation of health care ethics;
Explain the principles underpinning standards and codes of practice related to the profession;
Discuss the role of community, culture and religion in influencing health care practice; and,
Debate the values underpinning difference pertaining to gender, cultural and disability.

Final Examination (2 hours) (40%)
