Synopsis

The Honours year aims to develop analytic abilities, research skills, and communication skills, as well as provide students with advanced knowledge in specific areas of Medical Biology, chosen from Immunology, Hematology, Trauma, Virology, Cardiology, Transplant Biology. In this unit, training is in the context of a scientific project, with an aim to train students in cutting edge scientific techniques as well as developing broad generic skills. Students undertake a supervised research project of a publishable standard that forms the basis of a thesis due at the end of the year. Students will also present seminars on their research throughout the year.

Outcomes

On completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Critically review the scientific literature that underpins the area of the research project;

  1. Undertake a supervised research project and contribute to project design and management;

  1. Apply appropriate laboratory techniques, research methodologies and data analysis methods to collect, interpret and report research findings;

  1. Effectively present research and findings orally showing a firm grasp of the area;

  1. Analyse research undertaken in the context of the discipline area and report findings in an extended written report.

Assessment

Assessment will be a submission of a research thesis: 93%
Oral thesis review: 7%

Prerequisites

A distinction average in 24 points at level three relevant to the project, and including at least 18 points of PHY, DEV, GEN, IMM, HUP, PHA, MIC or BCH units.
