Synopsis

This unit outlines the design process with particular reference to creative idea formulation, information searching, problem solving, and incorporation of two and three dimensional design principles in terms of form development. User-centered design models are considered in terms of cultural, physical, logical and semantic constraints, mapping relationships, standardisation, control and feedback factors. Methods of design communication and presentation are explored and applied.

Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will:

understand and enjoy the challenge of designing consumer objects geared to mass production
have an appreciation of the practical and theoretical nature of industrial design, in particular the intimate relationship between rational processes and inspirational factors in design
have an appreciation of user-centred design criteria
be able to identify, analyse, and interpret the general characteristics of design tasks
understand simple models of the design process and their applications
plan for and efficiently undertake simple three-dimensional projects with regard to functional, technical, structural and aesthetic design criteria.
