Synopsis

Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago and its fourth most populous nation. It is a plural society made up of many groups distinguishable on ethnic, religious, linguistic, and other cultural grounds. The unit will examine the various socio-cultural traditions which have shaped and continue to shape contemporary Indonesia.

Outcomes

An awareness of the unity and diversity of Indonesia
an understanding of the significant social, cultural, political and economic forces that have shaped (and continue to shape) contemporary Indonesia
the conceptual tools for understanding those processes
a sense of their own personal and cultural reflexivity as they use material written from different theoretical perspectives
the critical and expressive resources to make use of the material to write independent essays on the topics provided or chosen for assessment.

Seminar work (1,000 words): 20%
Book review (1,500 words): 30%
Essay (2,000 words): 50%
