Synopsis

This unit is a designed to advance students' knowledge and understanding of sports coaching and development. It will provide students with the opportunity to expand and integrate previously taught concepts from targeted disciplines (biophysical foundations, physical education, community sport and physical activity, sports psychology, nutrition and sports coaching) by employing an interdisciplinary approach. Problem-based learning will be used to develop students' theoretical understanding as it applies directly to practical applications in sports coaching and development.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should:

  • be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of relevant theory underpinning sports coaching and development practices
  • be able to apply theoretical concepts from biophysical foundations, physical education, community sport and physical activity, sports psychology, nutrition and sports coaching to coaching and development scenarios
  • be able to plan, implement and evaluate a program based on sports coaching theories in a scenario-driven task; and
  • be able to work effectively as a member of a coaching and development team and examine how the differing disciplines interact to provide a holistic approach to sports coaching and development practice.

Assessment

Assessment 1 (2000 words equivalent):50%; and Assessment 2 (2000 words equivalent):50%
