SynopsisThe fundamental variables used to describe traffic flow are considered and the procedures used to analyse the capacity and level of service of both signalised and unsignalised intersections are explored. Students will be introduced to aaSIDRA intersection analysis software. Traffic surveys are also considered in detail. Public transport is also considered through an examination at the route level including determination of fleet size and factors affecting operational reliability. Intelligent transport systems are also examined. Consideration will be given to the role of communications, encompassing oral, written and drawing components, in the practice of transport and traffic engineers. Objectives
