Synopsis

Students will develop, in consultation with a supervisor, a focused research project in an area of Korean Studies. Students will produce a substantial research report that engages with a research method to answer a discipline-specific question and demonstrate a thesis. The dissertation will demonstrate a command of methodology, a close knowledge of the texts or issues studied, a high degree of competence in appropriate academic discourses.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students will have demonstrated that they are able to:

  1. Identify significant research questions and develop a methodology for investigation.
  2. Undertake independent research under the guidance of an academic supervisor.
  3. Systematically and comprehensively collect data relating to the research topic.
  4. Critically review current interpretations of both primary and secondary sources relevant to the research question.
  5. Discuss and assess methodology and primary data through the application of relevant theoretical and conceptual frameworks.
  6. Develop a sustained, coherent and logical argument in relation to an in-depth analysis of the topic.
  7. Present an independent piece of research in an acceptable scholarly form.
