Synopsis

Global Studies is designed to prepare students for the experience of study abroad. The unit compels students to engage with the prospect of 'cultural difference' through an examination of the place of the individual in the global movement of people. We use case studies to explore a range of cross-cultural encounters connecting historical ideas with contemporary concepts of conflict and conquest, forced and voluntary diasporas, migration and asylum. The unit considers the ways in which identity is challenged by mass-movement and how multicultural policies have developed to assimilate, integrate - and separate - cultural minorities.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students will have:

1. a good understanding of the historical origins of the global movement of people;
2. developed skills to reflect on their place in the global world;
3. engaged with students in other countries and across cultures around their understanding of the 'individual', the 'other' and 'cultural difference';
4. developed skills in critical reading, analytical thinking and academic writing in preparation for the ATS3793 unit.

Students undertaking the unit at third year will be required to demonstrate:

5. a deeper understanding of the key concepts;
6. a more sophisticated formulation of a research essay question;
7. a higher degree of analytical writing.

Assessment

Class participation: 10%
Blog entries (3 x 350 words): 20%
Research essay (2500 words): 50%
Reflective essay/test (1000 words): 20%

A minimum of 22 hours per semester consisting of 2 hour seminar or 1 hour lecture and 1 hour tutorial (may vary for different modules).

Prerequisites

ATS1325, ATS1326 plus at least 36 points of first-year level units in line with course structure (i.e. must have completed all of first-year).
