Synopsis

This unit will explore historical and contemporary philosophical perspectives on sex and gender. We will discuss feminist critiques of mainstream moral and political thought, as well as apply ethical and social theory to consider contemporary problems of sex inequality and difference. Particular examples discussed will include debates about the veil, the division of labour in the family, whether women and men reason differently, and the selling of women's sexual and reproductive labour. Notions of sex equality and difference will be contrasted with debates about disability rights, religious diversity and anti-discrimination measures for gays and lesbians.

Objectives

Upon successfully completing this unit, students will:

  1. acquire a thorough understanding of historical and contemporary feminist critiques of mainstream philosophical theory;
  2. be able to critically apply philosophical theory to issues of gender, sex and equality;
  3. be able to critically analyse claims of discrimination and equality in contemporary social and political debate.
