Notes Previously coded ISA2070 SynopsisIn March 2004 the African Parliament was formally constituted - the first such pan continental parliament to be so formed. The path from colonies to independent states has been a long and challenging one. Surveying the entire continent from the late colonial period onwards, we will see how ordinary men and women, peasants and workers, subjects and citizens, political and economic elites and religious and cultural leaders created new forms of meaning and power. Themes concern African states, political parties, a growing civil society, developmental paths and the complex cross-currents of wider international worlds from 1945 into the current period of globalization.
