Notes
DescriptionThis course gives students the opportunity to deepen and broaden their understanding of the basic workings of the English language from a number of perspectives: structural, historical, socio-cultural, developmental and pedagogical. It focuses on the design of English, how it functions in society, how it develops and changes, how it relates to thought and how it is acquired and learned. ObjectivesStudents develop specialised skills in the analysis of the structure (grammatical, syntactic, and phonological) of the English language as well as the ability to critically assess its written texts. They also develop an understanding of the problems encountered in intercultural communication, and learn how English has come to be a global language. Students will graduate with highly developed skills in professional writing and oral communication, skills which will make them successful employees in the current global English-centric environment.
